Jaipur and its palaces

No where in India is the romance of the maharajahs as strong as in Rajasthan, the land of kings! Impressive forts, castles, opulent palaces, and the simpler havelis built around courtyards dot this desert state.

In this special tour, we take you to visit some stunning examples of Indias' royal past. Most of our overnight stops are spent in castles and princely homes, which are still the residence of former royal families, giving a personal insight into living history. This is a magical sojourn through one of the most colourful parts of India.

Day 1: MUMBAI ( BOMBAY )
Arrive in Mumbai, transfer to a charming boutique hotel located close to the Gateway of India.

Day 2: AHMEDABAD
We take the early morning express train to Ahmedabad, the capital of Gujarat . It is a city full of bustle and the old part of town has a rich heritage of architectural styles and many havelis or mansions of intricate wood and stone work. (B)

Day 3: DUNGARPUR
Drive to Dungarpur where we stay in the magnificent Udai Bilas Palace , a fabulous 19th century palace overlooking a lake and backed by green hills. Meals are served in the banquet hall with crystal chandeliers. You can retire for a drink to the beautiful drawing room which displays African hunting trophies from days gone by. (B, D)

Day 4: DUNGARPUR
Morning visit to the 13th century Juna Mahal Palace , situated on a hill above the village. It has excellent frescoes, miniatures, glass and mirror inlay work. A notable feature here is a collection of 50 scenes showing the various positions of the Kama Sutra. Afternoon at leisure. (B, D)

Day 5: UDAIPUR
Continue to the beautiful city of Udaipur which presents an enchanting image of white marble palaces, placid blue lakes, attractive gardens and green hills. We stay for two nights in a lovely hotel overlooking Lake Pichola . (B)

Day 6: UDAIPUR
In the morning we enjoy a tour of Udaipur which includes a visit to the huge City Palace , still the residence of the Maharaja. The afternoon is free to wander through the interesting bazaars. (B)

Day 7: RANAKPUR
A few hours drive north of Udaipur is the superb Jain temples of Ranakpur. We stay overnight in Fateh Bagh, a beautifully restored heritage hotel. (B, D)

Day 8: DEOGARH
Not far from Ranakpur is the formidable Kumbhalgarh Fort. After visiting the fort we continue to the pleasant and little-frequented town of Deogarh . The narrow bazaar road, with good textiles and silver jewellery shops, winds its way up to the top of the hill where you find the beautifully renovated 17th century Deogarh Mahal Palace. (B, D)

Day 9: DEOGARH
Enjoy a jeep safari to the nearby Raghosagar Lake where tea is served by the water’s edge, and you can search for the numerous migratory birds the lake attracts, including the hauntingly beautiful Saras crane. (B, D)

Day 10: JAIPUR
Drive to Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan, which is popularly known as the Pink City as the buildings in its old, walled city are all constructed in pink-coloured sandstone. We stay two nights in a small heritage property close to the old city. (B)

Day 11: JAIPUR
On our city tour we visit the City Palace , the Observatory and the Hawa Mahal. The afternoon is at leisure to explore the bazaars or perhaps visit the magnificent Amber Fort. (B)

Day 12: SAMODE
Samode is a small village nestled among rugged hills where cobbled narrow streets curve up till you pass through massive arched gates to the fairytale palace. This superb restored 18 th century palace was the location for the movie, The Far Pavilions. (B, D)

Day 13: AGRA
Drive via the abandoned Moghul capital of Fatehpur Sikri to Agra , city of the Taj Mahal. (B)

Day 14: DELHI
Morning visit to the Taj Mahal. Afternoon at leisure. In the evening we transfer to Agra railway station for the express train to Delhi . We finish the tour in Delhi , where we stay the night in a comfortable hotel close to the airport. (B)

Day 15: DELHI - Transfer to the airport for your onward flight. (B)
